Belgian solar car makes history and wins first-ever gold medal!

Thursday 25 October 2018 - It was a collaboration between eight different generations and it worked: after a tough race, the Punch Powertrain Solar Team took gold in the Carrera Solar Atacama. They were the first over the finish line after 36 hours of racing spreading over five days. In total, they travelled 2577 km across the Andes mountains and along the Chilean coast. C-Mec delevired the housings of the famous power boxes.

No ordinary race

“It was a huge fight for survival but we made it,” says driver Jasper Schrijvers from Rotselaar. No kidding – it really is the most extreme race in the world, not only because of the route but also because of the weather conditions. That was something for which both the team and the solar car had to be thoroughly prepared. The team worked enormously hard over the last six months to be here and show off their car.

Making history

“As the Belgian Solar Team, we were able to take the gold medal for the very first time,” says team leader Adrian Baiets from Leuven. Eight different generations of the Punch Powertrain Solar Team were present: a collaboration between experience and new insights that clearly worked. According to Baiets, “The team worked enormously hard over the last six months to be here. It was fantastic to lead a team like that to victory.” A victory they certainly deserve!
